The first visit at Qajuuttap Sermia’s calving front
The Cryosphere Cluster team of the GreenFjord Flagship Initiative visited the calving front of Qajuuttap Sermia, an ocean-terminating outlet glacier of the Greenland Ice Sheet. They installed time-lapse cameras and seismometers to monitor the iceberg calving of the glacier and additional tide and river discharge gauges. Furthermore, measurements of water temperature, salinity and turbidity along vertical profiles were taken on board of different boats and ships in a fjord with only land-terminating glaciers (Igaliko Fjord) and in another fjord with multiple ocean-terminating glaciers (Nordre Sermilik). Furthermore, the team scouted the region around the villages of Narsarsuaq, Narsaq, Qaqortoq and Igaliku for future GreenFjord investigations.
